Surfers Healing, REV Returns for One Perfect Day at Annual Surf Camp

The tide started high and so did the intentions for the children and families gathered on Folly Beach early Wednesday morning. Surfers Healing, a national nonprofit program that hosts surf camps for children with autism at locations worldwide, has a long-standing chapter in Charleston, now celebrating its 16th year.

A barrier island nicknamed ‘the Edge of America’, Folly Beach was transformed into a bustling scene as over 200 children and their families cheered with excitement, vaulting across the sand and ready to have a perfect day.

For the second consecutive year, REV united with the event’s volunteer community and provided support, both in financial backing and volunteer assistance, ensuring that the day was unforgettable for the children and families involved, who find respite in riding the waves.

Jamie Tuberty, a parent and REV volunteer, reflected on his experience attending the surf camp with his son since 2016. “Over the years we’ve been fortunate to meet Big Jon, an amazing surfer who has generously shared weekends surfing with my son. This year will be the fourth time they’ll experience the event together. Witnessing my son spending time in the water with one of his best friends is so special. Every child deserves to be celebrated in this way.”

Throughout the day-long camp, REV team members facilitate event set-up, escort families, participate in event logistics, and provide meals and snacks. The meticulous involvement guarantees that each child is able to experience a day of inclusivity and “Going out in public can be very difficult for many of the children and their families,” Tuberty said. “But this is one of the few environments where everyone understands and is aware of the journey that these families have been on and continue to pursue on a daily basis.”
