#HumansOfREV Su Mack – Retail Operations Speciali #HumansOfREV Su Mack – Retail Operations Specialist Not long after I started working here, maybe 2003 or 2004, I saw a lady come into the branch who was really needing help. I noticed she was speaking Thai, and since I recognized some words she was saying, I asked her if there was any way that I could help her. I kept thinking, ‘What if that was my mom?’ I was scared for her. I found out that she was homeless, and she was living in a facility, being abused. I noticed there were bruises on her and she kept telling me, ‘they take my stuff, the people I stay, they take my stuff’. My husband and I lived on the base right across the street from the branch, so I decided to take her back there with me because she was the widow of a veteran. I just kept seeing my mom in that lady. My mom was originally from Thailand, and she also got married to a military guy. So at the base entrance, I told security that she was being abused by people in the facility, hoping they could contact off-base security or police. Telling them that information was not an easy decision to make for the lady, but I do not regret it. Thankfully, the base security officers made a report, it was investigated, and found that there were other people in the facility being abused, as well. It all made the news, and apparently, the place was shut down soon after. In the meantime, my husband and I let the lady stay with us for about a week to give her a place until we could find different help for her. After she left, I did not see her again for about a month. One day, she came back to the branch and said thank you, and gave me a scarf and a hat she made me as a gift. I learned then that she was living in a different facility after the authorities helped her. I saw her in the branch a few times after, but I don’t know what happened beyond that because we moved from the branch at the base to Dorchester, further up the road. It was through that experience that I realized there are so many people who need help. I became more aware, especially of people in need, and that we need more kindness, more empathy.
