My mom loves to sing. And she has a beautiful voice. But when we were young, my sisters and I weren't allowed to go outside and play until we allowed her to sing for us. She loved Smokey Robinson. All The Temptations. She would have the broom, the hairbrush, and she would sing. She'd get us all up Saturday morning and we'd be cleaning the house - wiping the windows and everything.
She'd put the windows up when it was nice outside, and music would be playing from our house all the time. She'd be like 'y'all wanna go outside? Y'all just gotta listen to mommy sing this song!" And my sisters would be like, 'not again! Can we please just go outside?!' And I'd be like, 'let's just get through this,' because I'm the oldest.
So we would sit there and she'd be singing to the top of her lungs - the whole song, beginning to end, before we could go play… But now as adults when we sit down and think about that, we love it. Now when we all get together, we're like, 'Mom, sing for us!' It was such a pain when we were kids. We hated it every time my mom wanted to sing, because we wanted to just play! But now my mom's getting older, so now we ask her to sing. Now, it's the best thing ever when we hear her sing. We all get together, we listen to music, we dance, we sing, and we do things that we used to do when we were children. And we just love it. That's our ritual.
